16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem Error upon Installation

We ran across this error when trying to install the software on Windows XP Professional Edition and Windows XP Home Edition. What is the problem and how can I correct it?

Symptoms:

The symptoms are the error messages and are heavily operating system related.

Cause:

Corrupted files as detailed below.

Resolution:

The error generally states one of the following messages:

  • 16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem path to the program that you are trying to start or install is C:WinntSystem32config.nt. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose ‘Close’ to terminate the application.
  • 16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem path to the program that you are trying to start or install is config.nt. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose ‘Close’ to terminate the application.
  • 16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem path to the program that you are trying to start or install is C:WindowsSystem32Autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose ‘Close’ to terminate the application.According to Microsoft’s Knowledge Base Article number 324767, this error is caused by one or more of the following Operating System files being corrupted:
  • Config.nt
  • Autoexec.nt
